BAMA Tech Talk '08

January 19, 2008

An overflow crowd filled the bays at PR Motorsports in Hayward on January 19th for BAMA's biggest-ever annual Tech Talk. Responsibility for the massive turnout went to special guest speaker Tom Matano, who captured the huge audience with a history of his part in the development of the MX-5. It's hard to overemphasize the significance of hearing the story of the Miata from someone who was there at the beginning--imagine learning about the Lotus 7 from Colin Chapman, or the first M.G.s from Cecil Kimber. In all, the combination of sunny weather, huge crowd, good food, and great stories made for an instructive and entertaining day.

Our host for the day, PRM proprieter and BAMA technical advisor Rick Weldon, opened the talk with some very knowledgeable responses to everything from tire pressures to brake lines. Rick speaks from years of experience with every Miata model year, so when he talks, miataphiles listen. Later, PRM provided sandwiches, drinks, and treats for everyone, and the lunch hour was spent meeting old friends, making new ones, and perusing the 70+ Miatas in the parking lot. Following lunch, Kaitlyn presided over a raffle that distributed some highly sought-after items, including rare and original artwork of early Miata designs donated by Tom Matano.
